Sylvia Irene Kushion - beloved mother and loving grandmother passed away peacefully at St. Francis Nursing Home on Saturday May 5, 2012 leaving 94 years of memories for her family to cherish. The daughter of the late Joseph and Dora (Graham) Sheltraw, Sylvia was born April 25, 1918 in St. Charles. She married Frank R. Kushion on February 20, 1937. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1988 after 51 years together. She was a member of the Nelson United Methodist Church. Sylvia was a busy homemaker as she and Frank raised seven children. Family always came first to her. Sylvia cooked many Sunday meals for the whole family and loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, doing crossword puzzles, and watching game shows.
Sylvia is survived by four sons: Terry (JoAnn) Kushion, Richard (Mary E.) Kushion, Dennis (Marge) Kushion, and Dave (Mary Janet) Kushion, all of St. Charles; two daughters: Virginia (Floyd ) Schmitter of Chesaning and Diana (Art) Breier of Prudenville and daughter-in-law Patricia Wesener of St. Charles; 28 grandchildren; 67 great grandchildren; 39 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by son Robert J. Kushion on August 12, 1990, grandson Alan A. Kushion on October 25, 1992 and great-grandson Joseph D. Browne on May 11, 2011, and infant grandchildren Daniel Kushion, Gail McClean, Samantha Holwerda, Tristan Goidosik and Isaac Goidosik; sisters, Opal (Leland) Broughton, Clara (Carl) Hammerschmidt, Amy (Theodore) Garchow and brothers, Homer Sheltraw, Royal (Florence) Sheltraw and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
The family would like to thank the 4th floor staff at Saginaw Covenant Cooper Hospital and the staff at St. Francis Nursing Home for the kind, loving care and respect shown to our mother. A special thanks to her caregivers, Marion Standley and Lucy Jimenez.
Funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Kendall Funeral Home, St. Charles. Rev. Jerry Densmore will officiate with burial in Nelson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Monday, May 7th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
